• U.S. News & World Report, for 16 consecutive years, has ranked the University among the top 10 in the West (Master's classification). Additionally, the University is ranked 13th regionally in the category "Great Schools, Great Prices."
• In 2010, the University of Portland ranked first nationally among "master's institutions" in a listing of top producers of Fulbright Awards for U.S. students, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. The University has been a leader among its peer institutions for several years in producing Fulbright scholars, ranking first nationally in 2007-08 and second nationally in 2006-07, 2008-09 and 2009-10. A total of 24 students from the University of Portland have won Fulbrights.
• In 2010, the University of Portland was ranked as one of 25 schools nationally by Parade Magazine as an "A-List" college for its programs in health sciences (nursing) and in business and accounting.
• Washington Monthly, based out of Washington D.C., has ranked the University of Portland 11th nationally among 551 "master's universities." Washington Monthly rated schools based on their "contribution to the public good" in three broad categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing scholarship and doctoral students), and service (encouraging students to give something back). Master's universities are defined as schools that offer a broad scope of undergraduate degrees and some master's degree programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.
• Fifty five valedictorians entered the University of Portland in the fall of 2010 as part of the school's largest incoming class - a record 885 students, who were also the most academically accomplished incoming class in University history. The class had an average SAT score of 1191 and an average GPA of 3.67.
• The University of Portland has been on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the past five years.
• The recently remodeled engineering building, Shiley Hall, which was dedicated in 2009, is one of only 25 buildings on college campuses nation-wide to be certified LEED Platinum, the highest possible designation.
• In 2009 and 2010, five new buildings were dedicated on the University of Portland campus, including two new residence halls, a landmark bell tower, an expanded dining center, as well as a renovated engineering building.
• The Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. School of Business Administration is one of approximately 100 schools in the United States and 250 globally to have adopted the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Management Education. The PRME's purpose is to hold management education institutions accountable for teaching students to be responsible and ethical business leaders. The Pamplin School of Business celebrated its 75-year anniversary in 2009-10, and is the only private institution in Oregon to have both its undergraduate and graduate programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
• The School of Engineering's undergraduate program is ranked 38th nationally by U.S. News & World Report in the Universities-Master's division. Recent University engineering graduates scored a 97 percent passing rate on the 2009 Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, well above the national average of 77 percent. The School of Engineering's building recently underwent a $21 million renovation and expansion and was renamed Donald P. Shiley Hall in honor of the 1951 alumnus who, along with wife Darlene, donated $12 million to the project.
• The School of Nursing was named the 'Best Nursing School for Men' in 2008 by the American Assembly for Men in Nursing. The School celebrated its 75th anniversary during the 2009-10 academic year, launched the University's lone doctoral program in 2008, and in 2007 received the Innovations in Professional Nursing Education Award and the AACN/Hartford Institute Award for Exceptional Baccalaureate Curriculum in Gerontologic Nursing from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Additionally, alternative entry master's degree students who completed their pre-licensure courses in Dec. 2008 tallied a 100 percent passing rate on the national licensing exam, well above the Oregon rate of 92.7 percent and the national rate of 86.7 percent.
• The 2009-10 season was perhaps the finest in the storied history of University of Portland athletics. Five programs were nationally ranked, and five programs reached postseason play. The Pilots finished fifth nationally among all non-football schools (DI-AAA)- higher than any other West Coast Conference school - in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings, which ranks schools based on their performance in all sports.
• The University of Portland excelled equally in the classroom as on the playing fields, compiling a dizzying amount of awards: 137 student-athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll for achieving at least a 3.0 grade point average; 32 named to the WCC All-Academic teams; and three earning Academic All-American status. The cumulative GPA of all student-athletes was 3.2, with 77 being named to the University's dean's list (having a 3.5 GPA or higher), and with eight earning a perfect 4.0.
• Each year, nearly 300 students participate in study abroad programs ranging from a year-long cultural program in Salzburg, Austria, language-intensive programs in Spain, specially designed business programs in London and biology programs in Hawaii or Australia.
• The Center for Entrepreneurship, which assists students of all majors and disciplines, has received the Young Entrepreneurs' Organization's Educational Program of the Year award; the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship's Specialty Programs in Entrepreneurship Education Award; and the Academy of Educational Leadership's "Innovative and Creative Education Award" for its focus on entrepreneurship education across all disciplines at the University.
